That’s the biggest complaint from employees facing pay cuts: How is this fair? Remote work can mean living in a lower-cost area, without a commute, but it can also mean higher household bills—especially if you need high-speed internet in a rural area. A Google spokesperson says the company has always paid employees based on their location, at rates that match the top of the local market. But precedent doesn’t do much to soothe the burn its employees feel as they watch their wages drop. “They’re basically saying we are going to get the same value from you, but we think we can talk you into taking less money,” de Vesine says. And this, many feel, is not fair.
Google’s latest flagship phones have an impressive set of automated, AI-powered tools to help make your photos look better, with smart blurs, object removal and skin tone exposure. While we’ll have to test them out to see if they work as advertised, they could be useful for everyone from pixel peepers to casual snapshot takers.
The change was announced on Twitter by Jeff Verkoeyen, engineer lead for Google Design on Apple’s platforms. I recommend reading the full thread if you’re interested, but Verkoeyen says his team “shifted the open source Material components libraries for iOS into maintenance mode” earlier this year. Material Design is Google’s in-house set of design conventions, which it introduced in 2014 in order to unify the look and feel of its apps and services across mobile devices, Chrome OS, and the web.
