Meta has announced a major update for its immersive virtual world, Horizon Worlds, on Thursday that will see it leave the metaverse behind. The tech giant said it’s shifting focus for Horizon Worlds to be “almost exclusively mobile” and that it’s “explicitly separating” its Quest VR platform from the virtual world.

The software giant dropped a bombshell for animators this week when it sent out an email announcing with a month's notice that it would discontinue Adobe Animate from 1 March. Existing users were told they would lose the ability to download their content 12 months later. Today, Adobe posted a statement on its website saying: “Animate will continue to be available for both current and new customers, and we will ensure you continue to have access to your content. There is no longer a deadline or date by which Animate will no longer be available. These are changes from what we shared in our original email.

Meta’s enormous bet on virtual reality ended last week, with the company reportedly laying off roughly 1,500 employees from its Reality Labs division — about 10% of the unit’s staff — and shutting down several VR game studios, according to The Wall Street Journal. It’s a huge reversal for a company that, just four years ago, staked its entire identity on the concept.

Adobe Premiere Pro users will be happy to hear there’s an iPhone app launching later this month, which the company is promising will be closer to the capabilities of its desktop app than the cut-down Premiere Rush app. The existing Premiere Rush iPhone app is being discontinued on September 30, the date when the new app launches. The older app had limited capabilities, requiring handoff to the Mac app for many tasks. Adobe says that the new app will be significantly more powerful, yet still simple enough for anyone to use.

Blogging service TypePad is shutting down and taking all blog content with it

In the olden days, publishing a site on the Internet required that you figure out hosting and have at least some experience with HTML, CSS, and the other languages that make the Internet work. But the emergence of blogging and "Web 2.0" sites in the late '90s and early 2000s gave rise to a constellation of services that would offer to host all of your thoughts without requiring you to build the website part of your website. The TypePad shutdown is rough news for the site's remaining user base—and it's yet another tranche of old Internet content that will only be available via the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, when it's available at all.

Glitch, the coding platform where developers can share and remix projects, will soon no longer offer its core feature: hosting apps on the web. In an update on Thursday, Glitch CEO Anil Dash said it will stop hosting projects and close user profiles on July 8th, 2025 — but stopped short of saying that it’s shutting down completely.
