The union representing employees at the Halifax office of international video game giant Ubisoft has filed a labour board complaint over the Nova Scotia studio’s closure.

The union, CWA Canada, was certified last month to represent 61 of the studio’s 71 workers. Three weeks after certification, the France-based company announced Jan. 7 the Halifax office would be shuttered, citing cost and efficiency concerns.

The union filed its labour board complaint on Tuesday, accusing the company of closing the studio in order to keep out the union, in violation of the Trade Union Act.

“After a long history of layoffs, crunch, and subpar working conditions in the global video game industry, my coworkers and I are thrilled to be joining the broader union effort to organize our industry for the better, which has been long overdue,” organizing committee member Foster Elmendorf said in the CWA’s statement.

The New York Times Tech Guild asked the publication's readers not to play its games, including Wordle and Connections, in solidarity when it announced that it was going on strike on November 4. Now, the guild has released its own versions of the The Times' games so that readers can still play without crossing its digital picket line. Of course, the workers' versions won't be able to keep your Wordle streak running, but they're pretty much the same games you've been playing on the publication's website.
