Now it’s a new era for Twitter—a platform where Musk is a heavy user and where his shitposts have gotten him into serious trouble numerous times. Now that he owns it, users are threatening to leave the platform in droves (although, as we’ve seen with Facebook over the years, mass exodus may only really happen if the service deteriorates), and Musk has already made major shakeups in its leadership.

Companies Are Deepfaking Celebs Into Ads Without Their Permission

REALPHA/YOUTUBE

Earlier this fall, Bruce Willis’s representatives shut down reports that the actor signed a deal to get deepfaked into future productions. A year before, a Russian telecom company deepfaked the action star into a TV commercial (with permission), and the Pandora’s box has been open ever since.

Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that agencies are injecting simulacra of A-listers including Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Elon Musk into ads. The most worrying part, according to the WSJ? None of the last three celebrities ever agreed to appear.

Facebook’s parent Meta mentioned the possibility on Friday as Canada’s parliament has begun considering Bill C-18(Opens in a new window), also known as The Online News Act. The legislation is designed to require internet platforms such as Facebook and Google to reach commercial agreements to share revenue with news organizations.

In a statement(Opens in a new window), Meta says the company shouldn’t have to pay news publishers at all. Rather, the social network provider argues it provides free marketing to media companies by making it easy for people to voluntarily share news articles online.
